Our 2019 Rosé is a blend of fruit grown in our estate vineyard, and Mule Plane vineyard situated 2.9 miles west-southwest (as the crow flies) from the winery. One vineyard is 100 years old; the other is five years old. Average age is 52.5 years old; old enough for some wineries to unashamedly market their ‘product’ as “Old Vine Wine!” Good for them, but that isn’t our style. As our winemaker says to anyone who takes him seriously, “It ain’t old vine nuthin’ unless you can prove its older than me.”
The fruit in this bottle was grown with the intent of crafting a blanc de noir (white from black) wine in the French Provence style of Rose. (low sugar, bright acidity, fresh fruit flavors.) To make a pink-tinted wine from red grapes is a complex process, but not a secret. The fruit from each vineyard was crushed separately, allowed to sit on the skins to pick up color, then fermented separately in stainless steel tanks at 55F. To retain crisp, refreshing acidity malolactic fermentation was not allowed. After clarification and stabilization, the two components were blended, filtered and bottled. No oak trees were harmed in the production of this great bottle of wine.
