2018 Rose, Mokelumne River Lodi

Overview

This wine is made from 100% Carignane grapes grown, according to the owner, in a vineyard planted "sometime" around 1920. Never mind the exact year, this is true "Old Vine" wine. It's called "Mule Plane" in respect of the mules who, a century ago, pulled cast-iron blades to cultivate the ground and vines.

We made this wine in a traditional French style; the grapes were harvested, then crushed, and the skins were allowed to remain in contact with the juice for a short period of time to gain color and flavor. The must was then pressed, and the skins discarded rather then left in contact throughout fermentation (as with red wine making). The juice is fermented as if it was a white wine at a very low temperature.

Tasting Notes

In the glass aromas of strawberry and watermelon abound, accentuated with hints of citrus zest. We also notice flavors of pomegranate and cranberries, and a refreshing crispness.

Drink chilled with friends at a picnic, or on your porch while watching your neighbor mow his yard.
